• Assorted Print Resources - From the Archives of the 12th Century Garb Yahoo Group: Some of Katrine's Source MaterialMessage #106, July 31, 2002 I thought I might put together a basic list of the sources floating around in my house. It is by no means comprehensive, but for those searching, I'll try to give you the run down of what to see. 20,000 Years of Fashion by Francois Boucher -12 12th century images. The Book of Costume by Milia DavenportHere we have about 60 images of 12th century art, with the emphasis on costume, from England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. This is a…
  • Belts, Buckles, and the 13th Century - This may be a bit off topic, but those who are looking for details on 13th belts will be able to see quite a few in the book: Gürtel des Hohen und Späten Mittelalters by Ilse Fingerlin, 1971, Deutscher Kunstverlag, ISBN 3 422 00645. There are many illustrations and extant pieces shown. Unfortunately for us, it starts right smack at 1200 and goes to about mid 16th century. I suggest finding this on Inter Library Loan if you want a good feel for belts in the high middle ages. Nice photographs, easy to pick out the date and location, even…
  • Courtly Love Undressed - (original subject line: Book) I'd just like to recommend a fairly new book (2002). "Courtly love undressed. Reading through clothes in Medieval Fench culture" by E. Jane Burns. It is not a book on dress history but a book on how dress can be "read" to see how dress is used to "negotiate desire, sexuality and symbolic space as well as social class" She also argues that "gender is often configured along a sartorial continuum" rather than being fixed in the two froms male and female. She has a constructivist approach to gender and uses modern feminist theory, but it…
  • Reprints of Goddard’s Thesis - (original subject line:  Re: Re: Braid casings research request) "I had seen copies available at www.abebooks.com but it was a reprint." And what's wrong with reprints? 🙂 I just want to know what to look out for. ~ Jannifer / Jan C. Lane Message #965, April 1, 2003 There was a company that was selling reprints on demand of out of print books. This list's bibilography says "Authorized photocopy available for about $36 from http://www.AstroLogos.org/ ". Their standard disclaimer is "Charts photographs & graphics may reproduce less than perfectly & may be reduced to fit pages" That wasn't what I wanted. YMMV.…
  • Norman Sicily - I am passionately interested in all things connected to 12 C., Norman Sicily in particular. In addition to participating in list discussions, I would like to connect with other folk interested in 1100's Sicily. ~ Isabeau du Lis Noire Kingdom of An Tir Message #1012, April 13, 2003 I have the good fortune to be able to visit Mistress Katheryn of Hindscroft's outrageously covetable library and spotted a series of 6 volumes called Storia del Costume in Italia by Rosita Levi Pisetzky in her collection. The 12th Century section has quite a bit of information on Norman Sicily and lots…
