• Regional Styles - (A compendium of information from discussions on the 12th Century Garb Yahoo Group list) Question:"My family and I are just joining the SCA and are planning persona's in the late 12th century. We are Scandinavian with one Irish boy (four boys altogether). I need some examples of or ideas on what we would be wearing. It seems that most cultures of Western/Northern Europe were wearing bliants (sp?) on women, but is this true of Scandinavian peoples? What did men and children wear and what were the Irish wearing at this time-boys particularly. And finally what would I make for my…
  • 12th Century Italian Resources - I had the opportunity to visit my friend Mistress Katheryn Hindscroft last night, and found a couple of books those of you doing Italian might be interested in. Kat has a library to die for.... The first was a spectacular 6 volume series called Storia del Costume in Italia by R. Levi Pietsky, 1964, Instituto Italiano. (the set costs about my 10 year budget for books). You will want to look at volume 1 for 12th century information. It has the only photograph I have seen of the entire purple dalmatic from the HRE coronation clothing. I put it on…
  • Highland Scotland - Is there anyone on this list that has been researching 12th-13th Century Scotland? Highland studies preferred but Lowland would be fine. Many thanks in advance ~ YiS ~ ~ Nettie Message #820, February 20, 2003 Actually, for a good start on all of your questions, go to Sharon Krossa's website at http://www.medievalscotland.org She is serious about her history and if it is on her site, you can count on it being well documented. ~ Brangwayna Morgan Message #821, February 20, 2003
  • Some Nordic Pictures - I've put three example of 12th century art from Sweden and Norway in the files section. Aleydis / Eva Andersson Message #877, March 7, 2003 Norwegian Bronzework Madonna from Viklau Madonna from Mosjö I've thought the Mosjö madonna interesting for 2 reasons - the headgear and the short capelet rather than a full mantle. Have you seen the rear of the statue? Katrine / Katherine Barich Message #878, March 7, 2003 Yeah, the capelet is very interesting and she also has some big patterns on her chest, either embroidery or appliqué, but I haven't heard of appliqué this early. Not…
  • 12th century Finnish - As nearly as I can tell, this is our 12th Century. Has anyone done anything with this? Is there any research on this you can point me to? http://www.mlab.uiah.fi/Mulli/html/media/valokuva/e_puku.html ~ Esther / ED Reese Message #969, April 2, 2003 Finds from Grave IV of Kansakoulunmki Hill made it possible to research the typical of a wealthy12th Century lady wore on special occasions. One part of the dress was a skirt made of white woollen cloth. On top of that, there was a dark woollen shirt, that was fastened at the shoulders by bronze pennannular brooches. The upper part of the…
  • Norman Sicily - I am passionately interested in all things connected to 12 C., Norman Sicily in particular. In addition to participating in list discussions, I would like to connect with other folk interested in 1100's Sicily. ~ Isabeau du Lis Noire Kingdom of An Tir Message #1012, April 13, 2003 I have the good fortune to be able to visit Mistress Katheryn of Hindscroft's outrageously covetable library and spotted a series of 6 volumes called Storia del Costume in Italia by Rosita Levi Pisetzky in her collection. The 12th Century section has quite a bit of information on Norman Sicily and lots…
  • Pleated Textiles from Lödöse (12th Century Göteborg, Sweden) - Original Subject line: "Pleating from Den Ljusa Medeltilden" {Editor’s notes:  #1 -- This discussion refers to an article ("Medeltida dräkt i bild och verklighet" -- " Medieval costume in image and reality" published in a book called "Den Ljusa medeltiden: studier tillägnade Aron Andersson" -- "The Bright Middle Ages: studies dedicated to Aron Andersson", published in 1984 by the Museum of National Antiquities in Stockholm, Sweden. #2 -- the scans referenced below were no longer in the files section when these discussion were being transfered; in the early days of the 12th Century Garb List, there was limited room for…
  • Outremer/Crusades Era Question - Our barony is doing a crusade themed event, and I am looking for information and references on the clothing of the Europeans in Outremer/Kingdom of Jerusalem during the 12th century. French language references are okay, but English is preferred. ~ Margrét Eyverska, / Becky Day Barony of Marinus, Kingdom of Atlantia Message #1018, April 15, 2003 Good luck! I've been able to find very little concrete or firsthand evidence on this. The indication form historians such as Runciman and J. Prawer is that the Franks of The Crusader Kingdom wore essentially the same styles and fashions as their European counterparts,…
  • More Nordic Wooden Sculptures - Finally I've uploaded some more Nordic pictures. They are in a photo album called “Wooden Sculpture”. My favourite Madonna, the one from Heda is there. BTW does anybody know how you do if you want to change the name of the photo album? I have some illuminations scanned that I want to add too, and then name doesn't make much sense. ~ Aleydis van Vilvorde/ Eva Andersson Message #1059, April 23, 2003 Madonna from Heda Thanks for sharing these! I note that all three Madonnas have the unusual neckline with a round piece that approximates where a keyhole neckline would…
