Rounding Gores

Do y’all round the hems of gores before you set them into your tunics/dresses? What happens if you don’t round them? Can I set them in and then just let the dress hang overnight? Or will the sewing gremlins attack my machine if I do such a thing?

I do not round mine at all. I pick a point on the side to insert them (usually right at widest point of my hip) and put them in. They will not be the same length as the rest of the dress. When it comes time to hem the dress, I cut everything evenly across the bottom.

I always round the hems of gores before I set them in. I just find it easier to hem that way – the edges start out more even, especially with gores in the center of the front and back. Whether you do or you don’t round them first I think is mostly a matter of personal preference.

Okay, I need to clarify a bit. I leave enough length at the bottoms of my gowns to turn up at least a 3″ hem, so the hemline will be smooth once I’m finished. 🙂
