Shoes

(A compendium of information from discussions on the 12th Century Garb Yahoo Group list)

“The Museum of London Shoes and Pattens book has a few 12th C. designs.  I have made some little cloth slippers out of geometric woven upholstory fabric that look good with my stuff- you do have to wear pattens outdoors. (or you can glue/ sew leather to the sole.)

“Do you have info on the coronation shoes that go with the mantle, alb and dalmatic? I read they were modified for wear in the 16th century, but originated in the 12th century. I was going to scan the image to the group page – there is a good photo of them in “The Kunsthistorische Museum Vienna, The Treasury and Collection of Sculpture and Decorative Arts” by Manfred Leithe- Jasper and Rudolf Distelberger. I think Cynthia Virtue has the photo from her book on her webpage.

“I’ll keep an open eye for 12th century shoe stuff in my German stuff and let you know if I find anything different!”

“Sounds like you’re leaps and bounds ahead of me here. I’m still thinking about searching for sources :-). I’ll have a look at that picture (since it appears to be one of the few books our university library has – well it does have a good science collection). I’m interested in these,
(http://www.virtue.to/articles/extant.html)
but more interested in the other pair, which is possibly a little earlier, and as far as i’m aware, unaltered. (also the thought of decorating shoes with tabletweaving seems a whole lot more possible for me than embroidery.)

“Anyway, I’ll see if I can get the original journal articles, and then sigh in despair when I find out how much german I’ve forgotten in the last 5 years since I stopped learning.”

“I am going to check another source for further info on the type of modifications were made on the “Imperial Shoes”. Did I mention that I really want to make a pair of shoes for my 12th Night bliaut?

“Was it in Waffen und Kostumkunde (WKK for short)? I do have some info on how to order back issues if you can’t get a library to send you a copy (I had some difficulty with a 1977 issue). The Los Angeles County Museum Library has quite a few issues. Also there is a service called ISI that has issues from 1983 (I think) to present that will send an article for $13 each. Backissues of the journal go for about $18 though.

Marc Carlson (aka Diarmaid O’Duinn) has put some of those patterns plus others up on his amazing shoe web site:
